Bethel Suloko Jacobite Syrian Cathedral Perumbavoor - Social Activities

Youth Association.

It was in 1980 that a group of young men, rooted in divine faith and following Christian principles started this association with the aim of fostering love and brotherhood among the fellow youths and to walk in the forefront carrying the beacon of light. With the immense strength acquired with the test of time, the association has grown into a strong pillar in the parish. Today, the association, with the guidance of Rev. Fr. Varghese Thekkekar, under the able hands of Rev. Fr.Poulose Thaikattu and Mr. Jibi Baby Nelliykkal, has achieved a glorious position. The charity works carried out under the leadership of the Youth Association is worth commendable and is a model, worth followed. Trough this the parish is able to extend its supporting hands to the poor and the needy in the locality.

Various activities undertaken by the Youth Association include: Distribution of food kits to the most deserving families in and around the parish for Easter. Financial assistance is given in building houses, for students, and for those living in orphanages and mental asylums. Medical Camps are conducted during various occasions and donations for marriages are also given.

A choir, prayer group, library, and a blood bank are run successfully under its leadership. Awards are given to those parishioners who successfully complete the SSLC and the Plus 2 exams. It is a great honor to say that His Grace Mor Theethose Eldho, Metropolitan of American Archdiocese was once an active member of this association. Looking back to the past 28 years, the association extended its every support and co operation to the parish in times of both glories and hardships alike.

Martha Mariyum Vanitha Samajam.

Following the footsteps of Blessed Virgin Mary, the Holy mother of our Creator, Vanitha Samajams are working in all the parishes, imparting religious knowledge among the parishioners. A unit of the same is working in Bethel Suloko Jacobite Syrian Cathedral also. Though the activities of the Samajam were not that strong over a period of time, the members were able to reorganize themselves responding to the need of the hour.

The Samajam was reorganized under the leadership of Rev. Fr. Varghese Thekkekara, the parish priest on Nov.10, 2002. A governing body was elected for the smooth running of the Samajam. (Details)

A 14 member executive committee was also elected to look into the day to day activities of the Samajam. Weekly meetings are conducted every Sunday after the Holy Mass, in the samajam office. The Samajam is extending its activities among the poor and the needy irrespective of caste and creed. Major Activities:

Providing financial support to the poor and the sick. Such people are often visited and consoled by the Samajam members. Financial help is also given to students from poor economic backgrounds during the beginning of each academic year. The members are ever willing to visit sanatoriums, orphanages and government hospitals and extend help in the form of food, cloths, and other requirements to the inmates.

Monthly meetings are conducted to assess the working of the Samajam. The Samajam is thus able to work, along with the other religious organizations like the Sunday School, and Youth Association, for the welfare and goodwill of the parish and the parishioners.

M.G.M. Sunday School, Perumbavoor.

The need to impart moral values and religious education among the youngsters of the new generation was the root cause behind the beginning of Sunday School in Bethel Suloko Jacobite Syrian Cathedral, Perumbavoor. Affiliated under the Kuruppumpady District and named as M.G.M.Sunday School, it had an earnest beginning which soon developed into a full-fledged Sunday School with classes unto the Plus 2 level. The authorities of the Sunday School are very particular in fostering the inborn talents of the children in the right direction so as to bring up a better tomorrow.

Apart from imparting religious education, the Sunday School gives due importance to co-curricular activities too. Beloved Metropolitan Theethose Mor Eldho, present Parish Priest Rev. Fr. Varghese Thekkekara, Rev. Fr. John Joseph Pathekkal and Rev. Decan Varghese Paul Thambra are only a few names of the huge galaxy of former students and teachers of this Sunday School who have reached respectable positions, both outside and the country. The introduction of V.B.S in 2001 is another golden feather in the cap of M.G.M. Sunday School. With the immense grace of Our Lord Almighty the Sunday School was fortunate to be adjudged as the overall champions in various Balakalothsavams conducted so far by the Kuruppumpady and Perumbavoor Districts from time to time. It was an occasion of immense joy for the Sunday School when they received the newly constructed Mor Kauma Study Centre, built in commemoration of the centenary year in 2003.

With a total strength of about 300 students and 27 teachers, under the visionary Headmaster Sabu Varghese Pathiykkal, the Sunday School is all set to thrive for a better tomorrow.
